Smart Casual Looks With a Cardigan
THE LOOK
Style Notes
KEY PIECE
A good cardigan is an indespensable staple in a smart casual wardrobe!
You can wear it for work or weekend with anything from jeans to dresses and skirts.
What kind of a cardigan would give you versatility like that?
A long one!
Once the coats are gone, an elongated relaxed cardigan will be your best friend!
Have a close-up look at the texture of the cardigan I have featured. This is one of the best knits to have in a cardi – it is durable, looks dressy and wears really well.
This is a viscose blend and you will come across it in a variety of brands. The thicker it is, the better it will wear.
If you have a long cardigan (even if it is not the same material), browse the looks below and see if you can recreate the outfit formulas in your wardrobe.
If you don’t have any elongated cardigans, consider adding one to the wardrobe!
STYLING IDEAS
A long cardigan will give you a lot more options than a short one.
Style it with:
- any jeans – straight, skinny, flares, mom, etc
- any trousers – skinny, tapered or wide leg will all work well
- knee-length and midi skirts – depending on the fabric, you can create casual as well as smart looks
- dresses – add a pair of ankle boots and you have an effortlessly cool smart casual look.
Longer lengths work much better for practicality purposes as well – they serve as a handy spring/summer coat.
DECIDING IF THIS IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Midi lengh creates a very stylish on-trend look but you can go for a shorter length – anywhere between the knee and mid-hip could work well (though teaming that length with skirts/dresses will be a lot more challenging).
I picked the cardigan in one this season’s trendiest colours – Chive. It’s a rich shade of olive and is a fabulous neutral.
Ideally choose a colour in a shade that is not overly bright as you want it to serve as a canvas rather than a statement piece.

Dress Up
The beauty of viscose blends is that they dress up very easily.
Just team the cardian with structured pieces like tailored trousers or a crisp shirt, or add dressy materials like silk. Adding a pair of heels will help to effortlessly transtion the cardigan into workwear.
Dress Down
These type of cardigans work very well with trainers so even if you decide to pair it with leggins, you will still look polished.
Pairing them with dresses is the perfect alternative to jeans looks if you are looking for non-trouser casual options.
