Beige: How to Co-ordinate

THE COLOUR

Style Notes

BEIGE

Soft, refined and understated. At a first glance, beige might not strike you as a very exciting colour. But I can guarantee you’ll change your mind when you discover how versatile it is!

To start with, it is one of the trendiest colours this season. Especially when worn head to toe! From celebrities to catwalks, Pinterest is bursting with total beige looks (check out Styling Ideas on how to nail it).

On top of it, beige is one of the most versatile neutrals to have in your wardrobe as you’ll never struggle what to put with it.

There is a variety of beiges out there with different tints, tones and value to them, which is great, as it gives you the flexiblity to find the right one for you.

Another reason why I love beige looks is that, when done right, they look expensive and polished. Even when the pieces are not expensive. This is a shortcut to creating refined ensembles with a luxury touch to them!

STYLING IDEAS

TOTAL BEIGE LOOK

Head-to-toe beige is a simple yet super chic look to do.

There are 2 ways to do it:

1. Going for similar shades of beige with little difference between the tones.

This is a very classy, elegant and lady-like combination. Be mindful of the following – this has to be the right shade of beige against your complexion and the cut/silhouette needs to be immaculate.

With nothing to distract the eye, bad cut/fit will become very noticeable.

2. Going for a variety of tones from light to dark.

This will give the look some depth as well as flexibility on the fit.

OTHER COLOURS

Here is another reason why you are about to fall in love with beige (if you haven’t yet) – it goes with all colours.

There are different undertones in beige (camel is warm, while stone beige has a cool undertone; the featured jumper is a warm beige). This is the only thing that might challenge you at times. But as you can see from combinations below, co-ordinating is still pretty efforless.

So feel free to play around with beige + the following colour categories:

  • beige + other beiges/ light neutrals – in most cases will be a no-brainer. These combinations can look very fresh and spring-like as well as chic and refined.
  • beige + dark neutrals (like grey, olive, burgundy, brown, black, navy, etc). In most cases these are fool-proof combos. Beige freshens them up without being too bright or light. This works very well in winter.
  • beige + most shades of red/blue/green/purple. See? I didn’t exaggerate when I said beige works with pretty much everything! Bright or muted, all these colours look harmoniuos with beige.

Pull out the beige pieces in your wardrobe and see what other colours you have that you didn’t think of co-ordinating with.

If you dont’t own anything in beige, check out the section below to see what pieces will work best.

DECIDING IF THIS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Whether to have beige in your wardrobe or not, in my opinion, is a no brainer.

However, what I would recommend considering is the following:

  • Beige can look a bit dull next to some colourings – if that’s the case for you, add some blusher or experiment with different shades of beige. Often going a bit lighter or darker does the trick. Beige can be tricky for blondes, but jazzing up my makeup a bit solves the issue entirely.
  • Beige can create a ‘naked’ illusion if the tone is close to your skin and you are wearing a tight piece. This is particularly dangerous in trousers and leggins. To avoid that, give preference to lighter or darker colours in trousers and avoid anything overly figure hugging.
  • Beige is a light colour so will have a tendency to make the area look bigger. So think twice what piece you are buying it in. If you are top or bottom-heavy, go for darker shades of beige.
